According to the latest Residential Energy Consumption Survey,  appliance energy consumption has grown from 24% of the average yearly costs, to 43% in Arizona, which should be a factor in kitchen remodeling Phoenix. The top five appliances that consume the most energy are the hot water heater, clothes dryer, refrigerator/freezer, desktop computer, and television.

In September 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency increased the requirements for products to be able to receive the Energy Star label, as well as added the, “Most Efficient Energy Star (year) label to help consumers identify leading edge products. Home remodeling product categories include: clothes washers, refrigerators, heating & cooling systems, windows, fans, as well as TVs and computer monitors.  It is a good time to buy new and do a kitchen remodeling Phoenix!

Since it is harder to qualify for the Energy Star rating than in the past, it is a good time for home remodeling to be more “green.” If your appliances are over ten years old, today’s Energy Star product offerings are an average of 25% more efficient, lowering utility costs.  A typical 20 cubic foot refrigerator made in the 1990’s uses 900 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, and now they are down to 390 kWh per year.

When it comes to buying a refrigerator, make sure you buy the size that you need. Some homeowners buy the same size thinking they can use the old as a back up. Running two refrigerators negate the savings from their new efficient model! Plan on buying an Energy Star rated refrigerator that is of a sufficient size so you do not need to keep the older model. You may want to do a kitchen remodeling project to best utilize your new Energy Star rated appliances. It will help you be more efficient by having your refrigerated food stored in one place, and in the kitchen where you need it!  Also consider obtaining an Energy Star Rated Dishwasher too.
