Is a Tankless Water Heater the Best Choice?

Is a Tankless Water Heater the Best Choice for Efficiency for my Phoenix home remodeling project?

About 90% of water heater replacements are a result of an emergency, so it is wise to plan ahead of a crisis what kind of system you may want next.

A traditional hot water heater does consume a lot of energy keeping 40 gallons or more of water hot to have ready when you might need it, and if you got two people taking a long shower in a row, the second person could end up taking a cold shower! A tankless water heater heats up water as it passes through as needed, so consecutive showers won’t be a problem! According to the U.S. Department of Energy, in homes that use 41 gallons of water or less per day, demand type water heaters can be 24-34% more energy efficient. To give you a reference of the amount of water typically used per activity:

Although one can have an endless supply of hot water, there is a limit in how quickly a tankless system can heat the water.  If you have two appliances drawing hot water, the water will pass through the unit too fast to get sufficiently heated. The unit’s limit is 2-5 gallons per minute. So high flow demand for hot water does not work well, e.g. someone taking a shower while running the washing machine.

Consider getting water sense certified  showerhead to lower gallons used per minute, and a front loading wash machine to prevent the problem of water not being hot enough when needed simultaneously.

If you don’t have gas to your home, you may want to consider a hybrid hot water heater for better efficiency, especially for a Phoenix home remodeling project!

Happy home remodeling!
