Home offices are growing in popularity for varying reasons and many stages in life:
  • The professional who wants to work for a specific company not in the area, but does not want to move.
  • The person who does not want to lose family or personal time having to commute daily to work.
  • The Mom, entrepreneur or retiree who wants their own business to work from home.
  • The dual career or single working parent who really needs to stay organized.

Having a designated workspace in your home will help separate work from home life, which is important for personal peace and balance. It helps foster efficiency being in a space with a focus of purpose and intention of what you want to be working on. Here are some tips for setting up your own home office.

  1. Choose a dedicated location that will help to avoid distractions like household chores, watching television, etc. If you have children at home, they can learn if you are in the office and the door is closed, you are not to be disturbed. This can be a spare bedroom, repurposing a formal dining room, enclosing a portion of a patio, reconfiguring a laundry room, or doing an addition or casita. Do not make it a part of the master bedroom!
  2. Design the space so you will be excited to work there. Include natural light and proper lighting so there are no shadows. If you will be on “video conferences,” situate your layout so what will be seen thru your computer camera in the background looks professional. Have sufficient cabinetry and shelving for your storage needs to avoid clutter. You may want to put in sound deadening walls and a door with a full light glass inset so you can see family and they can see you. Paint the walls a color you love and hang photos and artwork that inspire you to do your best.
  3. Think about how you will be using your home office. Where should the computer and printer go? Will you have a standing desk? Dual Monitors? Will it be used by others to work, or for client or training appointments? How much surface space do you need for work and for projects? Will you need a wall space for tracking goals, results, etc.? Plan for possible increase in need and use for the office.
  4. Plan for convenient locations for electrical, telephone, and cable outlets. Have your surge protector strips easily accessible. You may want your Wi-Fi router on a switch so you can easily shut it off when not in use for security. Keep in mind electronics don’t like static (or heat), but all hard surfaces create sound reverberation. Will you want a ceiling fan?
If you do not need a home office for daily use, but do want an organized desk station, you may want to utilize a guest bedroom. If guest stays are short, you may want to install a murphy bed so for the bulk of the year it is set up as an office.

How to Keep the Chill Out
You want everyone to be nice and warm for the holidays, and use your cash for gift giving, not for paying a too high utility bill! If you haven’t had a thermal energy assessment, when it is cold and you are running your heat, it is a good time for your home to be checked. The infrared photography is a tool that can show where heat is escaping from your home if it is conducted in the early morning or late afternoon before or after the sun heats the walls, and the inspector looks at both the inside and outside walls to compare. You could be missing a panel of insulation in a wall that you are not able to see!
If you have done that within the last few years, you may want to do some of your own home checks.
Windows are the thinnest material of the building envelope. You want a good quality, highly efficient double pane window for better insulation. The next vulnerability would be in the perimeter of the window. Visually inspect the edge of the window on the outside for any cracking. Feel with your hand held above the edge of the frame of the window on the inside of the home it there are any cold spots where there could be air leaks.
Next, check the depth of attic insulation to make sure it is thick as it needs to be. Attic insulation settles over time. It is most effective with the cells of the material are intact, and not crushed. Insulation that has been packed down by the weight of something will not be as effective.

The next weakness in the buildings barrier to the outside are the outlets and point of entry of plumbing, and exhaust fans. Again, feel with your hand for a draft or a cold spot that may need to be addressed.

Finally, check the door sweeps to make sure they are intact and providing a good seal. It makes sense if you are trying to keep the house warm, to keep the warm air in, and the cold air out in the winter!

We timed our project to be done while we were gone for a couple of months. Unbeknownst to Cook Remodeling, my brother was frequently checking up on the progress in the evenings and sending me photos of the construction. He was amazed that on any day he dropped by, the jobsite was clean, and he could tell everything was being built to high standards. Learning how to cook nutritious food is an important life skill. A home cooked meal is better for one’s health than buying processed food with chemical preservatives and flavorings, and can be better than going out to eat, but what can a young child do with knives and recipes? ….If you have ever watched, Chopped Junior , it is amazing the skill that even 8 years olds have developed! Bringing kids into the kitchen to prepare a snack, treat, or meal, or create fun baking projects is a proven way to bond and create lasting memories. It can also teach children lessons about following instructions and responsibility during the cleanup process. Who knows, you might discover a budding chef that will surpass your skills and be cooking for you! Best of all, everyone is rewarded with tasty results! Here are a few tips for involving your kids or grandkids in cooking:

Safety :   The kitchen presents dangers that you’ll want to be sure children come to understand the risks and respect. It is best to plan for ample time in the preset of cooking. Show them how to properly handle and use all the tools (knives) and appliances, and ask them to then show you to see if they understood. Explain the steps from beginning to end, and let them volunteer for the part they want to do for your project. Start by preparing the ingredients and measuring what will be needed and having them ready when you start making the recipe. Have them practice cutting skills by holding celery rim side down properly (the claw with fingers tucked under and knuckles closest to knife) while cutting until it feels natural to them.
Give tasks :   If you need to make a complicated recipe that is beyond their skill level, give the child the option of narrating what you are doing, so they are engaged in watching how it is done, or give them the option of doing a step. If you are in a time crunch, set your child up at a station with a task that won’t halt the process. This can be chopping vegetables for a salad while you cook the entrée, or washing them while you chop the others. If you’re baking something together, perhaps let them stir while you add ingredients, or provide them with the correct measuring utensil to add to the mix.
Be patient :   Cooking is difficult, even for adults! Praise your child for a job well done, and be patient if it takes them longer than expected. With a positive reaction and encouragement, your child will learn confidence and take pride in their work and strive to be helpful with other tasks around the house.

My mother, who could pass for 50, was celebrating her 70th birthday. I phoned to say our family of seven wouldn't be by until later in the day as some of the children had homework to finish first. To prepare her for an interrogation when we arrived, I explained that her third grade grandson's assignment that day was to interview an elderly person.

A firm believer in getting homework done, my mother saw this as a legitimate excuse for our delay. "Of course," she reasoned, "he'll have to do that before you can come here."

There used to be the mindset of, no pain, no gain . Typically, we are rewarded for more effort, but one can exercise too much in a session, or in a row for their body to recover. Mistakes are made when people who have lapsed in exercising, then work out at the same intensity they were doing before. Some think they should get a couple day’s worth in at one time since they aren’t consistent or are “too busy” to get back to it. Signs of over exercising are: extreme fatigue, feeling sluggish, pains, fat gain, getting sick. Those are signs that the physical demand was more than the body could handle.
With obesity, disease and poor health conditions skyrocketing in America, it is more important than ever for people to understand the importance of daily physical movement and exercise. Exercise is important for every person, of every age, not just those who are overweight. We need to work our endurance/cardio-vascular system, build muscle strength (if we don’t use it, we lose it), and we need to place demands on our bones so they strengthen too. Take a look at these important physical activity guidelines for improving your overall health.

Infants (Birth-12 months)
While infants up to a year old may have limited mobility, it is still important to take them outside two to three times a day when possible. Regularly exposing infants to fresh air and sunshine helps prevent vitamin D deficiency, improves sleeping patterns and strengthens their immune systems. Give them tummy time to strengthen neck muscles. Observe when they are done, and gradually increase the time.

Toddlers (12 months-3 years) & Preschoolers (3 years-6 years)
Toddlers thrive when they have 60 to 90 minutes of active play each day. This doesn’t need to happen all at once; small bursts throughout the day work well. Activities should include moderate-intensity aerobic (walking, playing on the playground), high-intensity aerobic (running, jumping jacks), muscle strengthening (tug-of-war) and bone-strengthening (hopping, skipping) exercise. Preschoolers should have 90 to 120 minutes of the same activities.

Children & Adolescents (6-17 years)
This age group requires a minimum of 60 minutes of activity per day, and should include a combination of moderate- to high-intensity exercise. Muscle-strengthening activities several times a week are also important for children this age. In addition, because of the current proliferation of electronics in our society, experts advise that children 2 years and older be limited to two hours of “screen time” a day (not including homework).

Adults (18+ years)
With schedules crammed full of work, housework, sports and school activities, sometimes it can seem impossible to find the time for regular exercise. The trick is to find ways to work exercise into your daily routine. For the most health benefit, strive for at least 2½ hours a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. Older adults need to be more careful to avoid injury, so walking and low-impact aerobics are a good option. It is important to stretch to keep agile.

Other keys to get benefits from exercise is to get adequate sleep, drink plenty of water (other beverages do NOT hydrate), and to eat 11-13 servings of fresh raw fruits and vegetables of all colors every day. If you are an athlete, the recommended servings of whole fruits and vegetables are 16-21 a day. Tip: avoid whey protein drinks. It is a waste product from making cheese that is a cheap protein filler used by many companies. It is acidic and difficult to digest and causes lots of physical problems.
