Do you have extra space in your home?  Or an underutilized room? Want to put it to better use? Turn that spare bedroom into a home gym, or convert the den or formal dining room into a media room.  Here are a few helpful hints for your upcoming project:

Home gym

We can avoid premature aging, disease, and even elevate mood by exercising.  From reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and diabetes, to building stronger muscles, bones, and joints, regular exercise promotes the sense of well being both physically and psychologically.  The convenience and time benefits associated with having your own personal gym just a few steps away are priceless for those looking to fit workouts into their busy schedules.  Another added benefit is the indoor climate control, so you can keep active despite extreme outdoor weather conditions.

To get started, think about how much space is available and the equipment you'll need.  Lay out the room so exercise will be inviting.  Will you want to use a TV or sound system while you’re working out?  Will you need a ceiling fan or more ventilation?  Make sure there's enough room for a mat, free weights, balance ball and any other equipment. You can save money on new or quality used exercise equipment at resellers such as Play it Again Sports.

Room readiness may include adding electrical outlets that will be needed.  Flooring is another component to think about, as larger equipment and heavy weights need a durable base that stands up well to wear and tear.  A few large mirrors on the wall will help you check for proper body position to avoid injury.  You may also want to decorate with large fabric panels for visual appeal and sound absorption.

Media room

There's nothing like a new media room to add value to your home and a little fun for family and friends in the process. Whether you're starting from scratch or adding enhancements to an existing room, you'll want to take into account a few things to make the experience a good one.

  • An enclosed, rectangular space works best for sound.
  • Low ceilings work best —12 feet or lower is ideal.
  • Cover the walls and use acoustic tiles on the ceiling so the sound doesn’t bounce around; try floor-to-ceiling drapes and give the room that true movie-theater feel. You may want to soundproof the room as well by using drywall and doors designed to absorb noise so others in the house are not disturbed.
  • Lighting should be soft and subtle. Strategically place light sources to avoid screen glare. Point track lights at the ceiling or walls, or direct lights toward the floor. Install dimmer switches so that you can control the light level.
  • Cabinetry can help organize electronic entertainment equipment and cables.  It will also provide storage for movies, software and games.
  • If the space is sufficient, you may want to build a riser for  an additional row of seating to accommodate more people.  For more details on space planning, here is a practical guide.  Keep in mind a common mistake is getting a TV that is too large for viewing, and placing it too high.  Its size and location should be based on the distance of the viewers to the screen.

Consider consulting with a sound specialist that can really help create an ultimate entertainment experience for your home.  Best of all, did you know that with a ClearPlay DVD player you can seamlessly filter out unnecessary violence, objectional language and content so you don’t have to be compromised by disturbing embellishments?  You can set the filters to be low to high in six areas and enjoy the whole movie!  Learn about it here.
