We all know that renovating a kitchen is one of the biggest, and also one of the best investments we can make to our home, but once that’s finished and we’re itching for the next remodeling project, what’s next?  Look outside!  Why not take that humble brick patio and small gas grill and turn that space into a magnificent outdoor kitchen? Extend the comforts of home to the outdoors and have fun entertaining!

Cooking in style: Consider all the different ways you would like to prepare main and side dishes. You will need a built-in grill at a minimum, but why not kick it up a notch and add a pizza oven? Perhaps you'd want a circular griddle for a outdoor breakfasts or for teppanyaki style Japanese cooking with drama and flair like at Benihana restaurants!  Do not forget a couple of side burners and warming drawer or two if you want a full kitchen experience.

Cooking with ease: There are a few items you’ll need to make your kitchen really functional. Drawers and cabinets in general are key for storage, so you don’t have to keep running back inside for a spice or utensil. To keep clean, have a sink and hideaway trash bins.

Beverages: Obviously, you need a compact refrigerator to keep everything cold and handy. To store ice, try an ice bin cooling drawer.

Comfort: While you are cooking and keeping everyone hydrated, make sure your guests are comfortable. Create an outdoor living space of cushy chairs, couches, and chaise lounges. For dining, you’ll want a comfortable table and chairs with a bright outdoor rug underneath.  We can't have anyone getting too hot or cold as they relax, right? Install a retractable awning or have patio umbrellas. Get a free-standing patio heater, misting system, or ceiling fans.  Consider in floor heating to keep diners warm as they enjoy their food as the evening cools.

The wow: Add some outdoor curtains that flutter with the breeze for intimacy and ambiance--they can even make the space seem so regal. And outdoor rope lighting,  bulb and pendant lighting that says, fun! all on their own.  Do you want an outdoor fireplace or fire pit?  How about a water feature?  A swinging love seat?

Outdoor kitchens can be as decadent as you want.  Make a plan, figure out your budget, and then have fun designing your own backyard space!
