Keep Your House Safe While on Vacation

You’ve booked your trip, planned your outfits to pack…just as important are safeguards for protecting your house while you gone. Here are some tips and tricks to return home to a house just as you left it!
Keep Your Home Safe While On Vacation
Home burglaries rise in the summer months because of many going on vacation. Criminals do not want the risk of being caught, and don’t want to spend a lot of time determining their targets. You can be strategic about making the house look occupied. Follow these tips to help safeguard your house.
Plan for Nighttime Interior Lighting. Have timers turn on lights in different locations to make it look like someone is home. You can even buy an energy efficient light that simulates that someone is watching tv (fake tv)! Closing all the curtains can be a sign of being gone, so have them partially open as if you were home.
Ready the Outside of the House. Make sure all the exterior lighting and motion detector lighting is working for a well-lit exterior. Trim any shrubbery or trees that may screen or assist a break in. Consider moving your hidden key inside. You may want to unplug your garage door opener as well so a thief cannot hack the code. Move outdoor furnishing to be more secure in case of a storm. Lock the gate not used by hired services (lawn, pool cleaning). You may want to buy fake security cameras as well.
Alert a Trusted Neighbor. Have them collect your mail, pull any door hanger advertisements that get left, and watch for unexpected packages. If you do not have a car to park in the driveway, you may ask if they would like to park in your driveway while you are gone. Encourage them to call if they have concerns.
Do Not Post Details on Social Media. It can be difficult to delay sharing the great time you are having on your trip, but it is best to wait until you are home. Ask for recommendations of online friends of what to do, where to eat well in advance, or use your lodgings concierge, or a site like Yelp, or TripAdvisor.
Plan Time for a Final Check Before Leaving. Back up your computer. You may want to unplug your computer and tv in case of a power surge. Lock up/hide valuables. Check each door and window in your house to make sure they are locked and that appliances are off.
The last step is to go and enjoy your vacation!
