Trends in Laundry Room Remodeling

Is laundry room remodeling on your wish list? Having a beautiful laundry room can make cleaning clothes a pleasure!  A trend in kitchen remodeling is to move household projects, tasks, and hobbies from the kitchen to the laundry room to keep a kitchen clutter free. However, most homes have a small, generic laundry room that is inefficient. According to a recent survey by Houzz, because of the amount of time spent in the laundry room, 10% of homeowners are electing to move their laundry room so they can have a larger multi-purpose space.

Some of the must haves in laundry room remodeling are ample natural light, a farmhouse sink for pretreating clothes or even washing a pet, plenty of storage, countertop space with a tile backsplash, and attractive flooring. Islands in the laundry room with a height that facilitates folding clothes is also popular, that provides seating.

Here are some things to consider with your designer:

• Do want clothes presorted in hampers? Would you want stackable front end loaders? Would you like two washers to do light and dark clothing loads simultaneously? Do you like to hang to dry? Do you want a steam closet?  A folding machine? How much ironing do you do?

• Do you have additional storage needs for: food, cleaning supplies and equipment, Holiday and party fare, pet food and care items? Do you need a dedicated freezer? Are there items stored in the garage you’d rather have in the house?

• Do you have specialty appliances that you’d like to leave on the counter, such as a crock pot, dehydrator, water distiller, bread maker, ice cream maker?

• Do you have hobbies or crafts such as scrapbooking, gardening, art projects…?

• Do you want a gift-wrapping station? A recycling center? A built-in desk?

If you want to use the space as a multipurpose room, you may want to specify that your washer and dryer be tucked in a cabinet, out of sight when not in use. It will increase serenity to not be reminded about laundry to be done!
