March is National Nutrition Month, and you cannot get more nutritious than just picked from your garden. If you want an easy, time saving, money saving gardening system, this is for you!
With the continued increase in food prices, the lowering of quality, and even finding empty grocery shelves, more people are wanting to grow their own food. To put in perspective for the cost of 2 heads of store-bought lettuce, one can buy a packet of 500 organic lettuce seeds!!! Not only can gardening save on the food budget, it cuts down the need to make another trip to the store. Did you know the average distance food has to travel from the farm to the warehouse to the store is 1500 miles? That’s why so many say, Buy local! Besides, as soon as a plant is picked it starts consuming its own nutrition to survive, so by the time it gets to the store to be brought home to your refrigerator, who knows how old it is. That’s why some food can go bad quickly and has little flavor!
The hesitation people have in starting to garden is the time it can take to learn all that needs to be done to start and to maintain it. There is the planning the space needed, amending the soil, the irrigation system and the weeding and dealing with pests. In the humorous book, The $64 Tomato, William Alexander figured out with all costs to set up his in the ground garden (tiller, fertilizer, hoe, rake, spade, etc), divided by the season’s yield, a tomato cost him $64!
There is an easy button!
A horticulturalist was tasked by NASA to figure out a way to grow the healthiest food for astronauts. Those in outer space must have their daily nutritional needs met, for there is no running to the store or the doctor! Not only is this aeroponic gardening system capable of growing nutritious mineral-rich food (which our soils are depleted of), it is a system designed so one can easily grow all kinds of thriving plants inside or outside.
Some of the benefits include:
Growing your own organic food steps from your kitchen is about as local and as nutritious and flavorful as one can get. It provides food security. It cuts down on transportation pollution, packaging, and adds oxygen to the environment. People who grow their own food, especially children, are more connected with what is healthy and will eat more vegetables/salads. Gardening has been found to improve mood, increase confidence and the sense of accomplishment, is a means of creativity and learning—all good for brain health. There are facebook groups and local communities as a resource, organized seed swaps, and you’ll be popular sharing your bounty. One can even be enterprising and earn money by doing it!
Grow what you want to eat and varieties you cannot find in the store, and remember to include edible flowers for added beauty! This system after a couple months of harvesting and lowering the grocery bill pays for itself, and the Tower Garden* is designed to last 25+ years!
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? Psalms 42:1-2
