Tips for Buying the Right Dining Room Rug

The dining room is a special place of gathering family and friends. A dining room rug can visually anchor the dining room furniture and be a part of creating the experience you want. From formal dinners to game night, an area rug can define a space, enhance the room, bring color and texture to set the stage. The wrong kind of rug can trap crumbs, and the wrong size can snag chairs. You want a rug that brings warmth, interest, and style. Here are some tips to help find the right one for you.

Shape  The rug should match the shape of the room and the table. A rectangle rug in a rectangle room gives a sense of order to the space. If the room and table is square, a square or round rug will work. Its best to center it under the table.

Color  Consider the colors of the space, including those if it is open to an adjacent room. It should complement the décor. If walls are light, a rug can bring in colors, patterns (which can hide stains better), warmth, even drama. Avoid lighter hues.

Size  A dining room rug needs to extend at 30 inches from the back of the chair (chairs with arms are further away from the table) to give room for a person to push their chair back to get up and not have the legs drop off the edge of the rug. It also gives the person enough rug to stand on while they pull out a chair.  Mark the floor with tape to get a visual of its border in relation to any other furniture in the room. If there is not a clear walking space on the floor to walk between it and furniture or wall, you may want to make it bigger so the path will be the rug.

Material  A flat weave or low pile rug is practical for ease of sliding a chair. Natural materials such as cotton or wool (New Zealand wool is softer) can hold up well to scrubbing a stain, as well as indoor/outdoor stain resistant synthetics. Some people like the look of woven seagrass, that does last but may be a little more work to spot clean.  If you have young children or pets, Ruggable makes machine washable rugs that have great reviews.

A rug can add personality and character. It can punch up a room with vibrancy, or tone it down with warmth. It creates a visual destination and also helps to absorb sound. If you have not had one because you were concerned it would get dirty, machine washable rugs are available, and you may wonder, how did you ever go without having a dining room rug!

Clients Reviews

I can’t say anything negative about Cook Remodeling. I absolutely adore them. They did everything that they said they would do. They did such a super job for my previous home where they did a kitchen, a bathroom, and a room addition. In this house I did not hesitate to call them do a complete room addition. I would recommend Cook Remodeling to anybody. I have referred them to several of my friends and have never had any bad feedback.
