Houzz 2021 U.S. Bathroom Trends Survey

Last month we wrote about the current national trends in kitchen design, this month we will look at the current bathroom remodeling design trends. Houzz, an online home improvement resource, did a 2021 survey of 75,470 users to find out if they had home renovation plans. Forty-eight percent of them were in the process of planning or remodeling their U.S. home. They found since they are spending more time at home, the condition and functionality of the home is in focus. More people are using professionals to help them design to make their homes work better for their needs and enjoyment. These are the priorities for their bathroom.

• Sixty nine percent reported they made the decision to remodel now because they could not stand their old and outdated bathroom, its insufficient storage and poor lighting. The bathroom remodeling budget investment increased 20% from the previous year, with homeowners investing 3 times more on major renovations for their home.
• Nearly 2 in 5 want their bathroom to be more spa-like for rest and relaxation with separate sinks, dimmable lighting, and adding greenery. They are also including aging in place design features (i.e., no threshold walk-in shower with bench seating and grab bars) to increase safety and ease of use.
• The color of white leads all finishes of cabinetry, countertops, and walls to give the sense of cleanliness and having a larger size.
• Half of the homeowners increased the size of their shower.
• Three quarters of the homeowners incorporate premium features such as a soaking tub or silent whirlpool bath, a rain shower head, dual shower heads, and thermostatic mixers (digital temperature adjustment) so the temperature of the water remains constant.
• Thirty six percent add an accent wall inside or outside the shower area, with it often being a tile accent.
