A smoothie can be a tasty meal that can be easily blended and taken on the go. Make sure that yummy goodness is promoting and building health and not disease! Many people add protein to their drink to make it a meal, but one has to be very careful in what they choose.
The Clean Label Project tested 134 popular protein supplements and found toxic contaminants of lead, cadmium, mercury, pesticides and carcinogens in many of them. Based on a rating scale of 1-5, with 5 being good, 74 of them scored only 1 star because of their toxic levels—yikes! In 2010 Consumer Reports tested the 15 most popular protein powders and also found heavy metals and contaminants. How can you be a smart consumer?
Don’t be fooled by the marketing terms, natural, holistic, miracle….read the label. Avoid whey as It is a waste product that is acidic and difficult to digest. Rice also has frequently been found to be contaminated with arsenic. Look for a whole plant-based protein mix that is high in fiber, gluten free, and GMO free that is third party tested and certified to be pure. The one I recommend is the only one with a perfect protein availability score.
