Is it tough to get going in the morning? Do you have an afternoon slump? Do you miss the level of energy you had when you were younger? Some seek coffee, soda pop, energy drinks or sugary snack bar for a quick fix, but it is only temporary and since it artificially “speeds you up, ” it can make you more tired afterwards!! Changing your lifestyle habits can have a more meaningful, long-term impact on your energy levels. If you’re tired of being tired all of the time, try these tips to increase your energy throughout the day:
Eat a healthy breakfast. A nutritious breakfast that as with all meals, are half plants, sets the pace for the day, especially when it comes to increasing your energy. The opposite, like sugar laden cereal or doughnut will spike blood sugar as your body revs up to get rid of it, and cause a crash and sugar cravings later. An easy breakfast to fuel your morning is a green smoothie (greens, fruit, plant milk, ice) with a high fiber plant protein drink mix* (gluten-free, dairy-free) that will satiate and sustain energy.
Increase your water intake. When you are dehydrated you often feel run down and tired. The easy solution is to drink more water. Each time you go to the bathroom, replenish with a full glass of water. An easy guide to know you are hydrated is urine should be pale to clear. Drinking water allows your heart to pump blood efficiently which helps to bring oxygen to cells throughout the body. So keep a water bottle with you to be continually drinking—using a straw can help.
Exercise more. Physical activity causes changes in your body that can release stress, improve mood, and boost your energy levels. When you exercise, the body builds endurance to be more efficient and sustain energy levels. In addition, exercising releases endorphins which can boost your mood. Do what you love to move, and put it in your schedule. It will also help you sleep better at night.
Stress less. High levels of stress can be draining, zapping your energy. Stress can be financial, relational, from working or living conditions. Difficult situations can be made worse by taking a role of a victim or having negative self-talk. Make a plan of action, engage in positive self-talk that affirms your desires, abilities and action plan. Stress can also be caused by our physical state from poor self-care or sickness. Gain healthy lifestyle habits, and be proactive about getting the 9-13 cups of a variety of fruits and vegetables by supplementing with juiced, dried and encapsulated fruits and vegetables*. Engage in stress reducers (besides exercising) such as praying, reading the Bible, taking time to deep breathe, talking to a trusted friend, getting a massage, and by getting professional help if needed.
Get quality sleep. Make the most of your sleep time by shutting down electronics an hour before bed to allow your body to produce melatonin. Try to be in bed by 10PM to stay in synch with our circadian rhythm to get more deep sleep. Keep your room dark and at a comfortable temperature as you go to bed. In the morning if you want to press the snooze button, make an adjustment to get to bed earlier to get more sleep which is more effective than a short snooze nap.
Bonus tip! Want a boost of energy before you go to work? Coffee is a one-note old way that causes jitters. The new symphonic way includes the whole coffee flower (including the bean) and other plants known to boost mental focus & concentration, enhance clarity of thought, and improve memory recall along with elevated mood from nootropics and adaptogens. Try Luminate*, mix in water, in berry flavor—it has only 2 grams of sugar.
Be patient. As it took time to gradually lose energy, it will take time to gain more of it back. Don’t give up, stay the course!
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. Timothy 2: 1-2
