Earth Day is April 22nd which is about taking better care of our planet to enjoy more now and in the future. This article will consider the personal health benefits of getting connected to the earth in a way called grounding, being in physical contact with the earth which provides negatively charged electrons that help neutralize free radicals. There have been significant benefits documented in over 20 studies that have generated interest in promoting grounding for better health. The subjects themselves have reported better sleep (including quickly getting over jet lag), more energy, greater ability to handle stress (less anxiety, depression, irritability), and lessening of pain by grounding.
It’s only been recent in human history that we’ve been living in electrified buildings, increasing the paving of surfaces and inventing shoes with synthetic soles lessening our contact to the healing properties of the negatively electrically charged earth. We are also continually exposed to more positive-charged electrical fields/EMF from power lines, cellphone towers, radio & tv waves, appliances (wi-fi router, cell phones, computers, microwaves, smart meters, any Bluetooth “smart” appliance…) and when we fly. Agencies such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified non-ionizing EMF sources (listed above) as a possible human carcinogen. Concurrently with the increase in EMF’s there has been a rise in chronic diseases such as auto-immune, type 2 diabetes, respiratory diseases as well as psychological disorders.
The surface of the earth carries a negative electric charge that will help negate the overexposure to positive electrons which pulls us out of balance. Grounding refers to the direct contact of the skin to the surface of the earth (grass, soil, sand, stones, or being in a natural body of water) or via various grounding systems (such as specifically designed bed sheets, mats or wired patches). Grounding has the ability to restore and stabilize our bioelectrical system. So be well hydrated to be more conductive and get your bare feet on the ground daily for at least 10 minutes at a time, 30 minutes is better, an hour or more is ideal (you can do segments of at least 10 minutes) far away from buildings, or electrical wiring or a transformer (electrical company’s green box on a pad, or mounted on a pole). Associate the time to be grounding with a daily habit, like the time that you are checking social media, having prayer time, having your morning smoothie and the like. Another means is using a grounding system that plugs into the grounding wiring in an outlet. The scope of grounding’s effects in the body based on research and a large volume of anecdotal reports as seen in this image:

Double blind clinical studies have found grounding/the gaining of negatively charged electrons lost from EMF exposure, poor diet, lack of sleep reap such benefits as lowering inflammation, boosting the immune system, improving cardiovascular health (blood viscosity/circulation and lymphatic return to the heart), improving sleep, aiding digestion, accelerating wound healing, assisting with autoimmune disorders, and improving athletic performance and recovery. Research has also shown grounding is a means to get into and help maintain a healing state with added electrons. The good news studies have found one can rapidly experience beneficial systemic effects of grounding, even for premature babies! Some people report an immediate difference, others it may take weeks to notice.
Free radicals are also neutralized by antioxidants which are found in fruits and vegetables. Since most people do not eat the recommended 9-13 cups of fruits and vegetables we need a day, another effective strategy also documented by double blind, placebo controlled clinical studies is taking Juice Plus+ Essentials*, a blend of vine ripened fruits and vegetables in capsules or chewables.
