June is a time to appreciate the Father’s in our lives. Often men want or have a tricked-out garage as their man cave, but men tend to use and enjoy outdoor remodeled spaces more. Men take pride in ownership, in claiming and defining their territory. Outdoor remodeling can make the yard become an essential extension of the home, utilizing the space to be functional for the family’s lifestyle. Being in nature is relaxing, helps one to reset and regroup, and as my father would say, “food tastes better when eaten outdoors.” Houzz did a survey of home improvement specialists to ask them what outdoor upgrades are clients requesting for their homes. Men may know the result they want, maybe without knowing the details of how. These are the top features most have included in their outdoor remodeling projects with design tips.
Comfortable Places to Dine and Entertain People want upgraded upholstery to be as comfortable outside as the furniture inside. String bulb lighting makes for a festive atmosphere. Easy access to the kitchen is key, ideally a window that opens out of the way for seating at a counter that is extended from the inside kitchen for connectivity and provides a pass through. The dining space can be a focal point, with creature comforts of ceiling fan or reflective heaters. A conversational seating area can be defined with a rug. Privacy is important, so outdoor curtains, or a decorative slat wall accomplishes that desire. Built in speakers for music is a great touch.
Permanent Shade Structure, Outdoor Kitchen A pavilion can create a special destination other than just having a back patio. It provides a better ventilated space for an outdoor kitchen. Men are wanting a more rustic Argentinian barbecue (uses wood and the cooking grill can be raised away from or closer to the heat). Others prefer also having a pizza oven. Guests should be able to sit and interact with the chef.
Designated Areas for Outdoor Activities There are more requests to facilitate outdoor exercise like a bocce court, workout stations, a putting green, or a place to rebound and easily store the equipment. There could be raised beds for gardening, a place for Tower Gardens.
Restorative, Relaxing Spaces to Lounge Areas that are secluded, with a resort-like like seating around a fire pit. Perhaps a secluded place to read, pray, or perhaps a cabana to nap!
Happy Outdoor Home Remodeling!
