Creating a Healthier Home: Simple Ways to Limit EMF Exposure

We live in an unprecedented time, one in which electromagnetic fields (EMF) are coming at us from cellphones, wireless routers, cell towers, power lines and electrical wiring, televisions, even cars and microwave ovens. Although research on the long-term health effects of EMFs is still evolving, preliminary findings show they cause a disturbance in immune function (allergies, inflammation…) as well as headaches, memory, anxiety, sleep disruption and more. It is wise to take simple steps to reduce unnecessary exposure — especially in spaces meant for rest and recovery, like bedrooms. The good news? There are many products to limit exposure, as well as simple habit changes can make a meaningful difference.

  1. Create a “Low-EMF” Zone in the Bedroom
Sleep is when the body restores itself, making your bedroom the ideal place to cut back on electronic signals. Ideally consider turning off your WiFi router at night (a surge protector strip with a switch makes it easy), or put electronic devices in your bedroom in airplane mode and store them at least 15 feet away from the bed. If you are close to a cellphone tower, or a smart meter, you may want to add more protection. It may be best to get an EMF meter to do a reading of the spaces in your home to identify the most problematic areas. There are EMF protective fabric material that can be used as a bed canopy, curtains, sheets and blankets. There is EMF blocking paint. There are outlet plug-ins to lower “dirty electricity” transmission. There are also area balancers to help the signals harmonize with the body. Learn more about such products here.
  2. Hardwire Where You Can
Whenever feasible, use wired connections for computers, TVs, and other devices instead of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Ethernet cables not only reduce EMF exposure but also provide faster, more stable internet connections — a win-win for work and streaming. Place a router away from the places you frequent, like sitting at a computer. There are mesh bags for routers to help minimize the broadcast of EMFs. Avoid the use of wireless gadgets on your body, like earbuds or smart watches—or at least keep the watch in airplane mode and periodically briefly connect it. There are protective shields for smart meters and cellphones that greatly reduce EMF exposure when talking on the phone, but does not interfere with its signal, such as SafeSleeve (which also has air tube headphones).
  3. Be Mindful of Smart Tech Placement
Smart home systems, appliances, and speakers are convenient, but try to position hubs and devices away from areas where you spend long stretches of time, like beds, couches, or desks. Even a few extra feet can reduce your overall exposure. You may also want to consider getting a smart meter shield.
  4. Choose Low-EMF Lighting and Power Options
Compact fluorescent and LED bulbs can emit small amounts of EMF, especially when dimmed. Opt for newer models labeled as low-EMF or shielded, and use grounded outlets whenever possible. Turning off lights and electronics when not in use is not only safer, but also energy efficient. Induction cooktops and ranges also emit EMF’s but usually at a lower level than microwave ovens which leak more radiation over time (unless the burners are turned up high).
  5. Cars and EFT exposure. There is significant exposure to EMF’s from the batteries in electric and hybrid cars. Smart cars that offer navigation/built-in WiFi, hands free use of phone, and more electronic systems, large LED displays are also sources of EMF.

Technology enhances comfort, safety, and connection — all vital to modern living. Make it a goal to minimize unnecessary exposure. One solution I recommend is having Aires Tech to help negate EMF exposure when using of a smart phone, computer, car, Induction Oven, and TV (try code EMF25 for 25% off). Think of EMF awareness as part of your overall wellness and home-care routine, right alongside choosing nontoxic materials, improving air quality, and maximizing natural light to create a healthier home!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  – Philippians 4: 6-7
