Natural Relief for Allergies

Posted on by in | 0 Comments

Nearly 40 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies, and this season has been especially aggravating. An allergy is a sign of an imbalance in the immune system. It is overreacting to the presence of something it misinterprets as being harmful rather than just another one of thousands of foreign particles we breathe in all day. It releases histamine, an inflammatory response causing a runny nose, itchy-watery eyes, sneezing, asthma, nausea and overall misery. Drugs, including over the counter can offer some relief but cause other problems (from drowsiness to sleeplessness!), wouldn’t it be better to practice prevention?

Strategic nutrition can help balance your immune system that is primarily in the gut, so it isn’t overreacting to pollen. The more the immune system gets out of balance, the more likely autoimmune diseases will develop (there are over 80 of them) such as arthritis, lupus, and the like with feelings of being tired, in pain. It is best to address symptoms early as a sign something needs to change before they get worse. Some of the best strategies may be in your own kitchen.  Try these natural remedies:

Flavonoid Polyphenols: Flavonoids are a kind of polyphenol that are powerful antioxidants that rid the body of the thousands of free radicals formed from cellular activity. They also strengthen the cells in your upper respiratory system to protect you from airborne irritants. Fruits, especially berries and citrus are rich in flavonoids. Apples, bananas, garlic and onions also have anti-inflammatory properties and help the immune system. Grapes, kiwis, artichokes, broccoli, carrots, and spinach also have an abundance of other polyphenols.

Omegas: Are nutrients we need every day for our health that is difficult to get enough of in our daily diet even if we are eating wild caught fatty fish (with the skin) and walnuts. Supplementation is often recommended to help reduce inflammation in the body (called the silent killer).  People try to bridge the gap with fish oils which have concerns of mercury and going rancid from being heated in the processing (hence fish burps). Fish get their Omegas from algae, so it is best to go to a pristine source of algae and choose a 3rd party certified supplement that includes Omegas 5, 7, and 9.

Tea and Local Honey: Eating a few teaspoons of raw local honey (with bees that have collected pollen where you live) has been shown to help calm the immune system. Try putting some honey in an herbal tea that is not too hot to the touch that are also known to be helpful: elderberry, sage, yarrow, thyme, eyebright, goldenseal, and stinging nettle tea. (Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing first.)

Homeopathic nasal mists: Inexpensive saline and sea saltwater sprays or Neti Pot help rinse away pollen from the nose which can lessen the allergic response. It can be a helpful strategy if you have been outside on a high pollen or windy day.

Minimize Stress: Chronic stress weakens the immune system, but there are ways we can counter life stresses that studies show really help. Invest in healthy relationships. Avoid processed or sugared food, stay hydrated with clean water, get sunshine (or supplement with Vitamin D), exercise, rest/have fun, get adequate sleep and nutrition. Studies show that a diet rich in a variety of 30 different fruits and vegetables and Omegas support the microbiome (gut health) and immune system. There are products I recommend that provide these essentials that is the #1 selling nutritional supplement in the world. You can send me an email for more information on getting a great foundation for your day (and kids can get it free with an adult order).

Not being able to breathe freely or enjoy your day with good health is a stressor! Implementing these strategies can help make suffering from allergies history, or at least minimize them! You are worth it!

Come, let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the Rock who saves us. Let us approach Him with praise and thanksgiving and sing joyful songs to the Lord. Psalm 95: 1-3
