Our skin is the final frontier of our blood supply, so good circulation of nutrients is what makes the skin have a healthy glow. Three fourths of the skin is made up of collagen which provides its smooth and supple structure. Starting at the age of 20 our collagen production decreases, and its loss accelerates at menopause. Some people are lead to believe that supplementing with collagen will help the skin, but the body breaks it down into amino acids for the whole body to use. There are many products that also claim by adding the lotion/crème/serum to the skin will help eliminate wrinkles, age spots, etc. It may help some but will be poorly absorbed, and oftentimes it is just an expensive temporary result. What is best is to make sure your body is well nourished and cared for. Beauty comes from the inside out. Here are the basics:
Do not smoke. Decreasing oxygen availability stresses the whole body, and with the skin last in line to get oxygen, it accelerates aging.
Avoid overconsumption of refined sugar, alcohol. They cause inflammation and break down collagen. Alcohol dehydrates and sugar sticks to and hardens collagen.
Avoid overexposure to the sun. We need the sun for it helps our body produce Vitamin D which helps with bone growth, assists with our mood and sleep, but over exposure to UV rays is damaging. Fifteen minutes a day of the at least arms and legs (and midsection if possible) between 10AM-3 PM is best, and up to 30 minutes if outside that time is recommended. After that protect your skin with sun blocking clothing and/or a healthy sunblock lotion.
Get regular exercise. It is a stress reliever and improves blood flow to remove toxins. Just 30 minutes a day of aerobic exercise will help turn back the clock.
Get adequate sleep. Out body does certain repair functions only while we sleep. If we have fasted before we go to bed (not eating after 7 PM), then our bodies will release Human Growth Hormone while we are in deep sleep, which is very important for slowing aging.
Include dark chocolate and soy in your diet. Both contain flavonoids that are good for the skin. Avoid brands whose chocolate tested high in heavy metals (request a list of healthier chocolate), and make sure the soy is non-GMO, preferably cold-water washed.
And most importantly:
Meet our nutritional needs of eating 9-13 cups of fruits & vegetables and Omegas daily. Every day our body is dealing with thousands of free radicals in our bodies that damage and age our cells. Antioxidants which are found in fruits and vegetables neutralize free radicals. To help get more fruits & vegetables in our daily diet, people take Juice Plus+, a strategic blend of 30 different vine ripened fruit and vegetables which are crushed, dried at a low temperature, and put in capsules or chewables for convenience, and a plant based multi-Omega.
Double blind, placebo-controlled studies published by Skin Pharmacology and Physiology and the British Journal of Nutrition reported taking Juice Plus+* increased skin micro-circulation by 39% while boosting skin hydration, thickness, and density in middle aged women.
Work on feeling your best with a nutrition dense diet and living a healthy lifestyle, and you will look your best!
