We all know intuitively that having an attitude of gratitude is better than not, but we may not realize the benefits of acquiring the habit of having that mindset throughout the day. Being grateful isn’t about denying the disappointments, difficulties and hurts which are a part of life, but rather about not staying stuck in the past event but living in the present. It is better having the thoughts that help to generate positive emotions which influences action and behavior for becoming the best we can be.
It is good to remind ourselves of the many benefits of being grateful for the good and the challenges in life to inspire a commitment to develop that pattern of awareness and thought of the positives. It’s like eating healthy or exercising, we do not get the habit, but rather we develop and need to maintain it daily. Just two weeks of engaging in daily recalling what one is grateful for can have positive effect that can last for months!

One can be critical of oneself thinking we don’t deserve…or be afraid that if we acknowledge something good that it could go away, have developed an attitude of scarcity or focus on lack, or worse, choose envy so one doesn’t see all they do have. It can be very effective to overcome a pattern of such self-limiting thoughts by the practice of priming the brain for change. Start your day by telling God all that you are thankful for. Psalm 100 is about thanksgiving and can get you in that mode. Gather the good into your heart acknowledging that you are loved and lovable. Priming your brain for rewiring a new thought pattern of what to be looking for will really make a difference in how your day goes. Soon you will be noticing more good throughout the day. Also practice priming the brain at night by writing in a gratitude journal what you are thankful for that day. The intentional recording strengthens having that focus and will help in as we sleep.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18
