The Psychology of Paint Colors

Posted on by in | 0 Comments

The color we select to paint with when doing home remodeling can do more than just reflect a sense of style or coordination of our color palette; they also influence our moods.  The wall color in a room makes the biggest impact for sixty percent of color in a space comes from the walls. After your flooring and furnishings are in place, that is a good time to choose the color that matches and works with the purpose of the room. If you have color intensity in your furniture, you will want a more muted tone on the walls. You may want the focal point of the room to have its own color.  Don’t be afraid to go bold for richness or drama.

It is a good idea to test out your adventure in color by painting a 4′ by 4′ swath in a primary vision line and see what experience it lends in daylight and artificial light. If the color is too strong, then ask for a “half strength” to lighten it.

What does color psychology say?

Blue. A blue room won’t make you feel “blue.” Instead, blue promotes feelings of peace, quiet, tranquility, security and overall well-being.  It is an optimum color for slowing the body down to relax. Pale or muted shades are great for bedrooms, reading nooks or any space where you go to de-stress.

Green. Greens mimic the grounded energy of nature and tend to set people at ease and is considered a healing and growth color. It has been shown to enhance memory, creativity, and problem-solving so it is good for a study or reading area. Like blue, green helps the mind unwind, but unlike blue, it packs a punch as an unexpected and refreshing choice. It’s a color of expectation.

White. It is a timeless color for contemporary or classic style.  White paint “opens up” even the smallest rooms making the space seem larger because of its ability to reflect light. It evokes feelings of cleanliness. For a room like a home office, a neutral color such as gray to help maximize productivity and efficiency.

Purple. Purple is associated with royalty and creativity. Depending on the shade, it can be both dramatic and calming.

Brown. The ultimate earthy option, brown tends to make people feel safe. Light browns offer a wholesome air, while dark browns imply a statelier and more conservative demeanor.

Red. Considered a color of passion and excitement, red heightens the senses and is known to increase appetite. Red hues are best suited for kitchens, dining rooms and other spaces that call for a warm social energy. Conversely, red should generally be avoided in bedrooms and spaces that call for a sense of calm.

Yellows. Bright, sunny and bold, yellow brings out a spirit of optimism and joy. A little yellow goes a long way because it can be overstimulating, so maybe reserve it for an accent wall or opt for a light, unobtrusive shade.

These are just suggestions when doing home remodeling based on color psychology. Painting a room your favorite color regardless of the psychology or the current “in” color is likely to make you happy no matter what.

We needed to correct structural issues to our basement to reduce the amount of noise downstairs. The problem of uneven flooring was worse than anticipated, but Cook Remodeling identified each and every issue, discussed it with us and found solutions. They started exactly on time and finished ahead of expectations. We did a total kitchen remodel, redid the fireplace and media wall in our family room. Every Cook Remodeling employee was professional, talented, trustworthy, courteous, and respectful–they are in a class all their own. We gave them complete access to our home. They treated it as if it were their own home. We have never felt 100% comfortable with a contractor’s employees and their workmanship before this, all of them at Cook Remodeling were incredible.
