Setting Family Resolutions for the New Year!

We are tuned to live a life of rhythms. There is a lot of energy when we start a time of something new, a new year, a new week, a new day. This is the time of year people often set personal goals for their New Year’s resolutions to eat better, more exercise, better sleep habits, to improve their financial situation, but have you thought about family goals? It can be about your spouse, kids, grandkids. The relationships that near and dear to us are priceless, and it can be easy to be distracted by the hustle and bustle of life. We can be passive and think you will get together (besides the annual vacation), but before you know it another year has passed, and how long has it been since…?

We are made to give and receive love, it is what makes us whole. With so many things competing for time, getting together has to be made a priority. Each stage in life brings its own time challenges but work together on a plan to create memories. So, call a meeting (make food and they will come!) and share your hopes to spend more quality time together, what can that be like, and when can the dates be set? It may need to be at a restaurant to help everyone stay on task. Here are some ideas:

Plan a Family Fun Time every month. Include seasonal and holiday themes for activity ideas like an April Fools dinner with a mystery menu mixing up utensils, dessert, veggies that they get 3 for each of the 3 courses. Have a board or card game night. Do a sport like game at a park or in the pool, go biking, hiking, rock climbing, play in the snow. Have a special staycation like camping in the yard, stage a play or dance production or a concert, do karaoke. Do fun things like have a banana split brunch, or a funniest home video creation.

Participate in a community service project. Choose a cause your family is passionate about and research ways you can volunteer. Host a fund raiser can be as easy as collected can goods for a food bank. Recruit people to work at Feed My Starving Children. Make blessing bags for the homeless with personal notes of encouragement. Giving back to the community sets a great example for kids, provides help to those in need, and makes you feel good!

Start a family hobby-business. What is a talent that adults can apprentice the younger generation? What about going to the thrift store, and finding some beat up furniture to fix up and sell? Or creating art? Or a sewing or crafting project to sell on Etsy? How can you monetize something that is fun as a family, and what does the family want to do with that money? It can be seed money to challenge how it can be increased, or a fun fund to splurge on the next vacation.

Time together sharing and caring is bonding. Just like you cannot buy love, you cannot buy time. It is a gift of self that you will find when you give, you have more to give life.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9

Clients Reviews

I can’t say anything negative about Cook Remodeling. I absolutely adore them. They did everything that they said they would do. They did such a super job for my previous home where they did a kitchen, a bathroom, and a room addition. In this house I did not hesitate to call them do a complete room addition. I would recommend Cook Remodeling to anybody. I have referred them to several of my friends and have never had any bad feedback.
