Laugh and Be Positive for a Better Life!

August 16th is National Tell a Joke Day, and laughter is great for the body’s health and spirit. We always include a joke in our newsletter email and have a weekly “Friday Funny” in our social media channels to give the gift of laughter. Did you know that studies have shown that people who have a positive outlook and find humor in everyday situations live longer? It is good for our physical and mental well-being to bring levity into the day. Here are some benefits:

Laughter boosts the immune system.
Positive thoughts and laughter help increase and strengthen our immune system for fighting invaders and cancer. Our immune system is continually keeping in check the tens of thousands of viruses we all breath in, eat and drink. Laughing can make their job easier!

Laughter keeps the heart healthy and increases brain function.
After a good laugh, our heart rate and oxygen intake increase which can reduce blood pressure levels. With improved function of the heart, the risk of a heart disease decreases. The boost of oxygen improves brain function and is great for sparking creativity and problem solving.

Laughter releases endorphins improves mood and relaxes.
The act of laughing releases endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals. Endorphins play a big role in our mental health and overall personal satisfaction. Laughter helps combat depression and improve coping skills.

Laughter relieves stress and pain.
When we laugh, we reduce the stress hormones known as cortisol which is responsible for inflammation and weight gain. The entire body relaxes for up to 45 minutes after laughing, relieving muscle tension and can reduce anxiety.

Laughter burns calories.
It won’t replace a workout, but it is a good way to augment your effort during the day!
joke: Wouldn’t it be satisfying while working out calories screamed as we burned them? Laughter is a way that we get back more than the effort we expend!

Start with smiling and make an intentional effort to look on the bright side. Gather friends to play a fun game or watch a comedy. Children naturally laugh a lot more so spend time playing with kids or grandkids. Developing a more positive, grateful, jovial nature will make one rich in the love of friends!
