In honor of Mother’s Day, we recall when celebrity Ashton Kutcher made a media splash by working with Houzz to secretly remodel his Mom’s house as a Mother’s Day surprise. While she was away tending to a newborn granddaughter, he oversaw the remodel for mom’s project. He transformed a den of la-Z-boy chairs decorated with a deer’s head to a place for her to enjoy.
“My mom…went to great sacrifices to give me the life that I have, and anything that I can do to say, ‘thank you’ is the right thing to do. So, if I can make this space special for mom and make it a space that she wants to go spend time in, and just really make it beautiful for her, that’d be fulfilling something I’ve always wanted to do.” Judging by her reaction on camera, it was a success. It was transformed into a cozy, contemporary-rustic space with big windows, built-in bunk beds for the grandkids, a fireplace and special areas to display Mom’s antiques and homemade canned salsa.
Whether the remodel for mom is a project at her house, a project to better host your Mom at your house, or to celebrate and say thanks to the Mom of your children, here are some ideas of a gift she can enjoy every day.
Does she love to create in the kitchen? Then make it a space that is a reflection of her and how she wants to use it. Whether it be for specialty cooking or entertaining there are many options to update. Consider adding storage, updating appliances, or creating a fresh look with new a countertop and sink.
Would she better appreciate an updated spa-like bathroom to relax and renew? A no threshold walk-in shower with a bench? New tile, vanity, and countertop? Better lighting? In-floor heating? A Tornado Body Dryer?
How about a bedroom addition for Mom like a walk-in closet, a sitting room, or a private gym? Maybe a second master bedroom, mother-in-law suite, or casita to host the mothers in your lives? Or to host the visiting of adult children and grandchildren? Maybe she’d love to get out of the house more, with a beautifully designed outdoor room.
You may not be able to stage a surprise by getting remodeling done while she is away, but you still can surprise her! Write down the remodeling gift you want her to have, put in in a card or wrap in a box, and she will be thanking you every day for making life at home that much better!
