Five Tips for Healthier Holidays!

From Thanksgiving through the New Year there are a lot more activities that can add stress. Places to go, people to shop for, and goodies galore! It is up to you to have realistic expectations of your time and be mindful of self-care. It will make for a more enjoyable time celebrating the reason for the season!

Eat A Nourishing Diet
It can be tempting to grab fast food, or skipping meal to overindulge in goodies, but food is our fuel and we literally become what we eat! The more you are intentional in getting your 9-13 cups of fruits and vegetables of all colors that our bodies need every day, the better you will feel. An easy way to get a good foundation for the day are fruits and veggies that are picked at the peak of ripeness, flash frozen, and powdered at a low temperature for maximum nutrition and put in capsules. For more information for this easy foundation, you can request more information here.

Schedule Exercise
Exercise is needed for a healthier digestion, immune system, strength of muscles and bones. It is a great stress reliver and helps release happy hormones. There are other benefits you can plan at the same time such as getting outdoors in the sun, listening to a podcast, audiobook, connecting with friends on the phone. Move the body, get the heart rate up, stretch your muscles, and working up a sweat is a bonus as it is a way of detoxing. You may want to follow a good workout with a healthy plant-based gluten-free plant protein drink mix that is 3rd party certified to be free from contaminants. For more information on one with a perfect digestibility score request more information here.

Get Adequate Sleep
If you have provided the nutrition our body needs, have exercised, then this step is much easier. Americans are bad about shorting themselves sleep in the quest to get more done. Studies have found people who do not get a good night’s rest, are not as effective the next day and have alertness and memory issues. We do better to go to bed around 10 PM and get up early to have a productive day. We need 7-8 hours of sleep. There are repair and restorative tasks the body will do only when we are asleep. There are hormones that help fight aging that are released when we are in deep sleep. Try to avoid eating after 7 PM, as the task of digestion also interferes with our quality of sleep.

Be Wary of Sweets and Alcohol
Did you ever notice that “flu and cold season” seems to start with the advent of Halloween candy, followed by a season of pies, cookies, and the like? The bad bugs in our bodies love sugar, and multiply when fed such. Add in other stresses and the front-line immune system defense can be overwhelmed and the second line of defense must kick in (mucous, fever, etc) to defeat the attempt to take over. Just make a treat is for a special occasion, choose a small portion to enjoy the taste and texture, and make each bite or sip an experience of what it offers. Savor it slow and you can make one small serving more satisfying that eating until feeling full.  Better yet, have a treat of a slice of a ripe persimmon which are in season this time of year and are a great treat. Alcohol is empty calories and acts as a depressant. Consider instead fruit mocktails, kombucha for that fizz, and remember our bodies are thirsty for water. Stay well hydrated.

Have Some Quiet Time
If you find your mind reminding you of things while you are showering or sitting in Church, it can be a sign you are not having enough down time. Pray, meditate, repeat positive affirmations, journal gratitude, read, but also create a time of quiet to listen. Deep breathe and relax. Write down things that need attention later, but take some time to just be. When you feel ready to enter into the day, make a list of the top things you would like to get done that day. Make a fresh list each day, not an automatic carry over from the previous. Have realistic expectations of what you can get done and grace if you need time for creative play, a different project, or just some time to relax.

With some intention, by taking care of yourself physically, it will be easier to have a joyful spirit of giving the gift of YOU!

Be still and know that I am God.  Psalm 46:10
