This is a partial list of the vegetable produce that the U.S Food and Drug Administration has recalled in the last 2 years due to contamination of listeria, e-coli, salmonella which are found in soil and contaminated water which cause food poisoning. They include many salad mixes, coleslaw mix, red & green lettuces, romaine, spinach, microgreens, herbs, parsley, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, green beans, butternut squash, brussels sprouts, red peppers, tomatoes and green chilis as unsafe to eat. Some were in processed products, others in a specific region of the US, but how many recalls and warning to not eat them did you happen to hear about? Since soil and runoff contaminated water are the main culprits for the recalls, perhaps you want to start growing your own soil-less garden.
The system pictured here was 12 years in the making on a NASA grant to develop a way to efficiently grow the healthiest food possible for astronauts. The good news is it is available for all homeowners with both indoor and outdoor models, and is even found in schools (with curriculum). It uses 90% less space and water, there is no dirt so no weeding, and has a mineral solution formulated for human nutritional needs that the plants thrive on, making it the healthiest food to eat. One can start growing earlier in the season, grow later, have multiple harvests from one plant, grow thru the summer (with summer crops) even in our heat, and for the times it gets to freezing temperatures, you can roll it over next to the house under the patio and throw a sheet over it for the night for extra protection.
October is the start of our wonderful Fall growing season in the Phoenix area. We have one of the longest stretches to grow food to enjoy, because eating fresh and fully ripened on the vine tastes best! Growing one’s own organic food continues to grow in popularity, but many hesitate because they believe they do not have the time to weed, monitor ground pests, or take the time to learn the details about companion planting, spacing, or even to get the dirt amended and irrigation just right. The vertical aeroponic gardening system makes it easy for a busy novice, or even for a master gardener to produce even more harvests.
And if you like to grow in the dirt, there are still crops that are best grown there like the root vegetables of: carrots, beets, bulb onions, radishes, turnips, parsnips, garlic, jicama, sweet potato, kohlrabi, sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes). You may prefer sprawling plants such as squashes, melons, and artichoke, as well as high stalk plants like corn or sunflowers to be grown in a garden bed as well.
If you haven’t had a garden before, start with this simple plug and play way. If you don’t want to worry about the weather, you can grow indoors as well (it will take up as much space as a kitchen chair). If you love greens and fresh herbs, if you are concerned with our depleted soil and want a mineral rich food, getting one of these will get you growing. Rod Finley in a moving TED talk about the scarcity of nutritional food for kids in the city said, “growing your own food is like printing your own money.” Request more information here.
